Stirrups Equestrian began in 1995. Formally South Auckland Pony Supplies, Stirrups began in a garage in Porchester Road, Manurewa. Immediately, new owners, Helen and John Walker extended the store, revamped the stock and proceeded to develop new lines until Stirrups became one of the leading retail shops in Australasia.
Daughter Elizabeth, a former Young Rider Show jumping Squad member, has been very involved in the business since it’s inception. Liz has enjoyed testing all new products and has been instrumental in helping source the best products available from around the world. She is very knowledgeable about all aspects of riding, competing and caring for horses.
Helen, a former show jumping rider and John, have bred and raced numerous racehorses with many successes as well as preparing yearlings for the Karaka Bloodstock Sales. John, a former athletics gold medal Olympian, understands the competitive mind and happily gives advice to those who ask! Both John and Helen were very involved in Pony Club, fund raising and developing courses and competitions and John was President of the Papatoetoe Pony Club for several years. Horses remain a lifelong passion.
